Environmental Risk Assessment for Acrylonitrile: An Evaluation After the Marmara Earthquake in Turkey

Unintentionally release of hazardous material from storage tanks, containers, transport vehicle, hazardous materials often destroy property and wreak substantial health and environmental damage. Environmental risk assessments rely on professional knowledge for the assessment of risks to the relevant individuals, populations, communities or ecosystem. In this study, environmental risk assessment of hazardous materials has been defined, a model determining maximum disaster potential and the risk assessment rate has been introduced and a risk assessment scale is presented. Acrylonitrile spill from storage tank crack of a facility is considered as a case study. Beside the characteristics of the environment, physical and chemical properties and its effect on species are described in the study. Disaster potential and the risk assessment rate are found 176 people and 81.4%, respectively. Acrylonitrile has extreme risk potential and it requires extensive emergency planning in environmental protection.
