The nearly conincident forms of the relations between seismic moment M₀ and the magnitudes M_L, M_s, and M_w imply a moment magnitude scale M=2/3 log M₀-10.7 which is uniformly valid for 3 < or approx. = M_L< or approx. = 7, 5 < or approx. = M_s< or approx. = 7 1/2 and M_w > or approx. = 7 1/2.
